Political Rant #54: Email Phone Calls Recorded as Standard

Pure Evil:The Home Office will create a database to store the details of every phone call made, every email sent and every web page visited by British citizens in the previous year under plans currently under discussion, it has emerged. The Government wants to create the system to fight terrorism and crime. The police and security services believe it will make it easier to access important data as communications become more complex. Telecoms firms and internet service providers (ISPs) have already been approached by the Home Office, which would be given customer records if the plans were realised. The security services and police would then be able to access records for any individual over the previous 12 months by gaining permission through the courts. The plans will raise concern from data protection and civil liberty campaigners and fuel objections to the perceived rise of a "Big Brother" state. There will be worries about the Home Office's ability to safeguard the data from loss or theft, after recent incidents such as when the child benefit information of every family in Britain with a child under 16 were mislaid. There will also be doubts about its capacity to manage such a large volume of information. About 57 billion text messages were sent in Britain last year, while an estimated three billion emails are sent every day. Since last October, telecoms companies have been required to keep records of phone calls and text messages for 12 months. The plans are being considered for inclusion in the draft Communications Bill to be published later this year. They are at an early stage and have yet to be passed to ministers. A Home Office spokesman said the move was needed to reflect changes in communication that would "increasingly undermine our current capabilities to obtain communications data and use it to protect the public".

The poor boy & his cousin that almost became President.

This is a dedication to the late Dr. Fausto Burgueño Lomeli, a cousin. His mother and my father were sister and brother. Fausto was a renowned Mexican economist, author, and almost became president of Mexico. There was always a paradox between Fausto and me in regard to social justice and on how to best construct a better society with justice, liberty and opportunity for all. Fausto was a leaning left Marxist while I am a centrist and pro-free enterprise without government support, as in Halliburton. When I was around 11, Fausto felt aghast when he saw me in drabs at the outskirts of my hometown, Cosalá, Sinaloa Mexico. He had come from the big city to visit historical our town. He told my biological father on just how desperately poor I looked. I never told Fausto that I dressed in drabs, to look impoverished, in order to safely hike alone Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains. As I used to hike through the wilderness, I'd try to figure out on how to best share a nation's resources with the poor. I noted how the poor often lived unplanned lives without any safety net or social security. I used to arm myself with slings and homemade bow-and-arrows as I walked and ponder through the wilderness. I'd play Robin Hood as I imagined on how to take money from the rich to give to the poor. While the farmers used to have to have to plan plant their crops around the weather with much uncertainty, the town's postal worker had one of the only few coveted secured jobs through government. My grandfather was an avid reader and through his various newspapers I learned about Socialism versus Capitalism or West vs. East and Détente. Later I used to wonder why communist Russia, through its repressive regime had to forcefully keep its citizenry from fleeing West to "freedom." As Mexico's university students began to fight for a better society under the Marxist flag, the government contained the unrest by giving many of the movement leaders desirable government jobs. Organized religion feared communism, as in Viet Nam, because it threatened a profitable business that too often has nothing to do with God. As I strived to see a better distribution of a nation's wealth, I eventually realized that Socialism or Communism were not the solution. An individual is at his best when he's in control of his destiny. I used to enjoy seeing how mom and pop business owners would become elated when they had a profitable year after difficult times or risky investments. As a child, the law began at home and the discipline could be rigid and severe. One did not dare to still a candy from the grocer lest face serious consequences. As a kid, I only saw one teen pregnancy. Because of social stigma, the girl was kept indoors throughout her pregnancy. We only knew the poor girl existed through hearsay. Since only the immediate family, not government, provided the social safety net, parents carefully guarded their daughters so that they would not end up failing and become costly as through a pregnancy. A single mother is often doomed to a difficult life. As I used to go on my long hikes, I pondered so much about poverty because I saw it first hand. When I arrived in the United States in the 1960's, I saw a society that was bursting at the seams. In Compton I used to see how group of kids would rush a store in order to steal from the grocer. I did not understand such disorder or frequent lack of character. Back then there was no free lunch and hunger was pervasive. Looking back, hunger was more beneficial to us than the abundant food that is now so freely given to the poor. While living in a Compton housing project, I saw how unrestrained birthing, regardless of parental skills or commitment, meant more public resources. People came to feel entitled to receive social benefits for life without taking notice that the wage earner had to be taxed in order for government to provide the benefits. The less a person has to work to receive something that appears seemingly free, the less he's likely to ever see the virtue of the work ethic and self-reliance. Once a person becomes chronically dependent on government to subsist, the person may forever lose his ability to think or provide for himself or family. Through government welfare, an individual often loses his empowerment and freedom forever. It is the loss of an individual's personal responsibility, character and work ethic through welfare that makes the system so costly and socially destructive. America's socialist public workers have been allowed to self-govern through collective bargaining that now threatens not only the entitlement system, but also our way of life. The welfare system is churning out poverty at unprecedented rates that has become unaffordable.Luis Lomeli, M.D./Beta
